Six Yoga’s

Tummo, the ancient practice of cultivating inner heat, is traditionally a cornerstone of Tibetan Buddhist meditation. Rooted in the Six Yogas of Naropa, it is a profound practice for awakening latent energy, purifying the subtle body, and attaining deep spiritual insight. While often practiced in stillness, Tummo can also be integrated into a dynamic flow, weaving pranayama (breath control) and hatha yoga (physical postures) into a seamless sequence that amplifies its transformative power. This dynamic fusion brings together ancient disciplines into a living, breathing practice that not only ignites the inner fire but also leads practitioners to profound realizations of unity and self-transcendence.
Awakening the Inner Fire: A Dynamic Flow
The core of Tummo lies in activating the inner fire at the base of the spine and channeling it through the central energy pathway, the sushumna nadi. Traditionally, this is achieved through specific pranayama techniques combined with visualization. However, by incorporating dynamic asana sequences, the flow of energy is enhanced, allowing the practitioner to experience the heat as a tangible, rising force that merges physical vitality with spiritual clarity.
To begin, one can establish the breath as the guiding principle of the practice. The Breath of Fire (kapalabhati) is a foundational pranayama technique that prepares the body and mind by generating heat and clearing energetic blockages. Sitting in a comfortable position, the practitioner engages in rapid, rhythmic exhalations through the nose, allowing the inhalations to occur passively. This dynamic breathing creates a rhythmic pulse that energizes the abdominal muscles, stimulates the navel chakra, and sets the stage for activating the inner fire.
Once the inner heat begins to rise, the practice transitions into flowing asanas, each synchronized with specific pranayama patterns. For instance:
- Cat-Cow Flow with Breath of Fire: Moving dynamically between Marjaryasana (Cat Pose) and Bitilasana (Cow Pose) while maintaining the Breath of Fire creates a wave-like motion along the spine. This sequence awakens the central channel and encourages the fire to ascend.
- Dynamic Cobra with Retention: Transitioning into Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), the practitioner inhales deeply, retains the breath (kumbhaka), and visualizes the rising heat moving from the base of the spine to the crown. Exhaling, they return to a resting position, allowing the energy to settle and integrate.
Experiencing the Rising Heat
As the practice deepens, the practitioner begins to feel the heat as a tangible presence. This is not merely physical warmth but a radiant energy that purifies the body and mind. The heat, perceived as a rising force, travels from the perineum(root chakra) upward through the central channel, passing through the navel, heart, throat, and crown chakras.
The sensations often include:
- A glowing warmth spreading upward along the spine.
- Pulsations or vibrations at specific energy centers.
- Light patterns—geometric shapes, spirals, or radiant grids—arising spontaneously in the inner vision.
At this stage, the fusion of breath, movement, and awareness dissolves the boundaries between body and mind. The practitioner enters a state where the inner heat is no longer “something” they experience but becomes an integral part of their awareness. The rising heat leads to the ultimate recognition that they are both the perceiver and the perceived, the fire and the light, the body and the awareness beyond.

The Light Path of Ösel
The rising heat of Tummo naturally leads into the light path of Ösel, the recognition of the luminous nature of consciousness. As the inner fire clears blockages and activates the central channel, the practitioner becomes attuned to the Clear Light that underlies all phenomena. This luminous awareness is not separate from the experience of heat; rather, the heat is its dynamic expression.
In this state, light patterns emerge vividly in the inner vision, echoing the fire’s movement:
- The practitioner may perceive spirals of light, radiant mandalas, or kaleidoscopic patterns.
- These visions culminate in a state of luminous stillness, where all forms dissolve into the vast, radiant expanse of the Clear Light.
This transition from heat to light is both a physiological and spiritual process. It mirrors the transmutation of matter into energy, where the dense becomes subtle, and the subtle becomes infinite. The practitioner realizes the profound truth of “I am That”—the unity of self and cosmos, light and heat, awareness and phenomena.
The Esoteric Fusion of Tummo Yoga
By integrating pranayama, asana, and meditative visualization into a dynamic practice, Tummo becomes a living art form, accessible to modern practitioners while remaining true to its esoteric roots. This fusion awakens the body, mind, and spirit, offering a direct path to recognizing the divine within.
Each inhale becomes an invitation for the fire to rise, and each exhale becomes a surrender into the luminous vastness of being. The dynamic flow transforms the body into a vessel of light, where heat and awareness converge in a single, radiant experience.
The Splendid Recognition
In the culmination of Tummo, the practitioner reaches a state where all distinctions dissolve. The rising heat is no longer an isolated sensation but the living pulse of existence, inseparable from the luminous patterns of consciousness. The final insight arises effortlessly: “I am this All, and All this is Me.”
This realization is not an intellectual understanding but a direct, lived experience. The inner fire ignited by Tummo becomes the gateway to the Clear Light, and the Clear Light becomes the mirror of the infinite self. Through this practice, the practitioner embodies the ultimate unity of heat and light, self and cosmos, realizing the timeless truth: “I am That.”
So if you really go for your Yoga wth full dedication, both the pranayama as well as the asanas, you will experience the heat patterns in your body and the dance of breath with the phosphene patterns, and all will blend in a crazy recognition of your divine nature. DO IT! WITH FULL AWARENESS!!!
