The Visions of Niklaus von Flüe in a nutshell and its relation to Jungian psychoanalysis and phosphenes

Here is an English translation and commentary of a PDF titled “Bruder Klaus und seine Visionen”, authored by Erwin Keller. The text is written for the Bruder-Klaus-Jahr and summarizes six central visions of Brother Klaus. Here is the original text:

Summary of Visions of Bruder Klaus

1. The Nature of His Visions

Brother Klaus was not a dreamer disconnected from reality. He was a grounded farmer who received his visions as unexpected intrusions, not inventions. Like biblical prophets or the visionaries of Lourdes and Fatima, Klaus was overwhelmed by these divine inner events.

Authenticity is emphasized: not imagined, but experienced.

2. The Star and the Tower

  • Prenatal Vision: Klaus said he saw a radiant star in the womb—an image connecting him to prophets like Jeremiah (Jer 1:5) and Paul (Gal 1:15), and to the star that led the Magi to Christ.
  • Tower Vision at 16: He saw a tall tower in the Melchaa Gorge where his hermitage would later be built.

The star represents divine guidance; the tower, vertical aspiration and being a spiritual beacon.

3. The Lily and the Horses

While watching his horses, he saw a beautiful lily emerge from his mouth and stretch to heaven. But when he admired a fine horse, the lily bent and was eaten by it.

The lily symbolizes purity and divine calling; the horse represents worldly attachment. The vision warns against losing the spiritual through earthly distraction.

4. The Pilatus Vision

He saw Mount Pilatus sink into the earth and the world laid bare. A massive crowd turned their backs on Truth, unable to endure it. Truth remained unchanging. He then saw Christ’s face in the veil of Veronica.

A prophetic critique: society rejects truth due to selfishness. Christ is identified as eternal truth, veiled yet ever-present.

5. The Fountain Vision (Brunnenvision)

On a vast square, many worked but remained poor. Nearby stood a gothic tabernacle-like palace, doors wide open. Inside, Klaus found a fountain flowing with oil, wine, and honey—crystal-clear and perfect. He knew these flowed from the mystery of the Holy Trinity.
Yet people outside ignored it, chasing wealth and ignoring the source of true life.

This is a powerful allegory of inner spiritual abundance ignored by materialistic society.

6. The Vision of Christ’s Face

Klaus once saw an intensely bright light surrounding a human face. He fell to the ground, heart shattered, face veiled. Since then, his face appeared terrifying to others.
He identified the vision as the face of Jesus Christ.

This parallels Moses’ encounter with God on Sinai (Ex 34), where the divine light altered his face. Klaus bore the divine encounter in his body.

🔍 Commentary: Mystical Depth and Phosphene Resonance

Many of these visions echo classic phosphene experiences seen in light-based inner yoga, Christian hesychasm, and mystical meditations:

  • The Star = a central phosphene dot or inner sun.
  • The Tower = the vertical light axis (as in kundalini or Jacob’s ladder).
  • The Lily = unfolding energy or subtle breath/light moving upward.
  • The Fountain = archetypal image of radiating point-center light, often seen as phosphenes flowing outward in threefold symmetry.
  • The Face of Light = the overwhelming intensity of inner radiance often triggers deep awe or fear—similar to the mysterium tremendum in mystical theology.

These were not merely symbolic visions but appear as deep spiritual perception, arising from intense stillness, inner emptiness, and divine contemplation.
